 The industrial world is populated by increasingly large numbers of rotating machines, and fewer & fewer people. A substantial proportion of these decreasing numbers of people are charged with the responsibility of keeping the machinery operating in an optimal way. Machines do not normally talk much, but they do give out signals revealing their discomfort, mainly in the form of vibrations.
All rotating machinery vibrates to a greater or lesser extent, but the changes in the vibration levels and patterns can reveal a lot about what is going on in the machine's environment. Mechanical problems are fairly easily diagnosed, and corrected, but other problems are harder to pinpoint.
